Verizon Becomes Fifth Founding Promoter Of RVU Alliance

Verizon has joined fifth Founding Promoter of the RVU Alliance. Verizon in the alliance to develop a specification for a new pixel accurate Remote User Interface (RUI) that will form the core of the new RVU home networking technology.

Verizon joins Broadcom, Cisco, DIRECTV and Samsung and RVU Alliance’s objective is to make it simple and easy for consumers to connect multiple electronic devices to create powerful home entertainment systems.

Richard Lynch, CTO of Verizon said, “Joining the Alliance gives us the chance to help lead the industry to an ever-simpler process for integrating consumer electronics into the home entertainment experience. Verizon is working to let our customers enjoy their advanced FiOS TV experience throughout the home on any device simply and easily. When adopted by consumer electronics manufacturers, RVU will enable that vision.”

Henry Derovanessian, chairman of the RVU Alliance board of directors said, “Verizon is a perfect fit within the Alliance leadership, strengthening the RVU technology by ensuring it meets the needs of a larger complement of content service provider networks.”

DirecTV May Drop Versus Channel on Aug. 31

DirecTV’s carriage agreement with Versus will end on Aug. 31 and the satcaster has informed their subscribers that the sports cable network will be removed from the DirecTV programming. Comcast owned sports network reaches about 75 million homes in U.S and DirecTV, which has more than 24 million subscribers, holds a key distributor of the channel.

NHL has recently announced its regular season schedule and the league’s main television partner in the United States is to carry 54 games from Oct.1, but DirecTV subscribers might not have access to those games. The Dispute between DirecTV and Versus lies on carriage fees.

DirecTV says “Versus is asking for terms which do not reflect the market and which they are not asking of all other distributors. DIRECTV wants to keep your monthly fees low, so it’s doing everything it can to avoid paying exorbitant programming fees.”

DirecTV has stated that it’s negotiating with Versus for settling the issue, if a settlement is not reached before Aug. 31 Versus channel will be removed from the DirecTV programming lineup.

Note: DirecTV carries both standard and high-definition feeds of Versus.

Blizzard Entertainment’s 2009 BlizzCon Begins On Aug.21

2009 BlizzCon will begin on August 21, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. Completely sold out Blizzard Entertainment’s two-day gaming festival participants will be able to play the latest versions of Blizzard Entertainment games as well as speak with developers in discussion panels, participate in tournaments and contests, and meet with fellow gamers and friends.

2009 BlizzCon celebrates with Blizzard Entertainment games during the convention that includes:

Warcraft

StarCraft and

Diablo

The convention will end with concert featuring the Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne and also Blizzard Entertainment’s own Warcraft-themed metal band Level 80 Elite Tauren Chieftain will be performing and Jay Mohr has returned to act as the master of ceremonies for the community contests taking place on Friday. DirecTV Extends Strategic Partnership With Quest For Five More Years

The leading satellite TV provider DirecTV has announced that it has extended its partnership with Qwest Communications for five more years. This agreement will allow Quest to offer DirecTV services to residential customers bundled with Qwest’s broadband and voice services.

DirecTV and Quest have launched a new suite of integrated services that enable consumers to maximize the value of their home entertainment experience through the dynamic combination of DIRECTV service and their Qwest High-Speed Internet connection.

David Olsen, DIRECTV Senior Vice President, Sales said “The agreement enables us to further evolve our successful relationship with Qwest by offering more ways for customers to take advantage of the integration of Qwest’s high-speed broadband and phone services with DirecTV’s best-in-class video service. DirecTV To Present At Worldwide Wireless and Wireline Conference

DirecTV will be launching The Sportsman Channel (TSC) in its Choice Xtra programming package in January 2009. The cable network that broadcast only hunting and fishing programming has announced that it has reached a distribution agreement with DirecTV to launch the channel in January. TSC will also launch its high-definition version in later part of 2009.
