Verizon announced that it will provide FiOS TV service to the consumers in the Philadelphia area. The Philadelphia City Council has introduced a bill to award Verizon a 15 year franchise to provide its FiOS cable and internet service through the entire city of Philadelphia. Once the bill is passed Verizon will start making its fiber-optic-based FiOS TV service available throughout the Philadelphia City within seven years of the franchise’s effective date.
Verizon will start providing its FiOS TV service to one-third of the residences in the city, within three years and remaining area will be covered within five years. Verizon will start with West, North and South Philadelphia, as well as Germantown and the Greater Northeast.
Gale Y. Given, president of Verizon Pennsylvania said in a statement “Philadelphia residents for too long have suffered from a lack of choice for their cable TV news, information and entertainment, We will change that in a big way, with a significant investment over the next seven years.”
